Potter-Dix Considering Middle School Model
The district is considering implementing a Middle School Model to better meet the academic and social emotional needs of this age group of students. Under the current K-6 and 7-12 configuration, there is limited opportunity to provide a meaningful transition for students from elementary school to high school. The model being considered would move the 6th grade to the Potter site. The district would then be intentional about implementing developmentally appropriate strategies to ease the transition between elementary school and high school. For example, more time could be spent reading and language arts instruction. Also, time would be devoted to the social emotional needs of 12-14 year old students.
One of the concerns that has been expressed is having 6th grade students and 12th grade students together. Please understand the district would be intentional about keeping 6th-8th grade and 9th-12th grade students separate; consequently, they would be on different bell schedules and kept in different parts of the building as much as possible.
