"Big" Kids Mentor "Little" Kids
Students in Mrs. Thomas's Yearbook class have the opportunity to mentor in the PD Early Learning Facility Daycare. Director Caitlin Tabor teaches preschool and the high school students are welcomed helpers to the daily routine of the daycare/preschool. Students have the opportunity to help in the daycare and are encouraged to complete at least two hours a week. There are nine students in the class this semester and they willingly volunteer to mentor each morning. Highlights of working with the 3-5 year olds included watching them learn how to do new things, seeing improvements in writing their name as well as letter and number recognition, reading books to them and play time. The preschoolers love their buddies and can be seen giving them hugs and high-fives in the hallways as well as cheering them on at sports events as they recognize their buddies on the team. This is a rewarding experience for both age levels.
